A view of the resident cows on the croft from the cottage window.

Cedar Cottage is an attractive modern cedar-clad bungalow set on a working croft in the township of Waterloo. The cottage is just a few hundred yards from a sandy beach full of wildlife and where fossils can be found.

Waterloo skirts the shores on the South East side of Broadford Bay on the edge of the village of Broadford, Skye’s second largest settlement where a full range of shops and facilities are easily available.

From the patio doors of the cottage guests can enjoy uninterrupted views of mountains and sea-shore, and gorgeous sunsets. From the kitchen window, for early risers, equally spectacular sunrises can be admired.

The croft on which the cottage sits is one of the few active crofts in this township, and carries Aberdeen Angus black cattle. Depending on the time of year, guests can observe the various activities which take place on the croft such as cultivation, haymaking, stock feeding and abundant wildlife. A croft is a type of small farm and is set in a rugged working landscape where agricultural equipment is stored and used.

Crofting is a low-intensity traditional form of agriculture which has preserved remote rural communities and the many rare forms of wildlife which find their last safe havens in the UK here. You will be able to observe many rare birds such as herons, curlews, oystercatchers, and geese. There are a range of wildflowers in season including many rare orchids. Otters frequently play on the shore just in front of the owner’s croft house. Patience and silence are needed to catch a glimpse of these shy creatures. There is a seal colony a few hundred yards away which can also be rewarding for those interested in wildlife.

Also on the family croft is a chambered cairn where rest the remains of the early settlers, the Beaker people. The cairn also shows signs of use by iron-age warriors. The cairn has not yet been excavated, and is simply a raised grassy mound typical of this type of burial structure.
